Grants in Action: Peter Pan School Play

Spring 2016 Grant Cycle

Beaver Valley School

School Play – Peter Pan.  Funds Received $450.00

 

With this generous grant, Beaver Valley was able to put on a school-wide play of Peter Pan in our covered play area. With the costs for licensing, performances, as well as costumes, sets, music and props, the grant funds provided by CEF (combined with our BV Parent Group and a Woods House grant) allowed us to accomplish this.

Anytime you are working with children to put on a play performance remarkable things happen. Here at Beaver Valley, we are able to see children grow through several stages of development, year to year. When two years ago you had a quiet Kindergartener who wasn’t ready to perform, but now, here comes that same child, able to remember multiple lines with ease.   That is remarkable!

We had a new student this year, in Third grade, he came in January from a big school. We were quite different for him. When we started the play, he was not sure how it would go and had trouble throughout practice.  Our 4th-grade veterans took it all in stride; they continued to encourage and support him.  In the end, his confidence grew, and he did amazing on stage.

Beaver Valley is a unique school due to its size – this allows us to share experiences with our students in ways that would be difficult in bigger schools. When we are working on a play, it is not an after-school activity. It is a whole school project and woven into our day with reading, speaking (projection and tone), music (singing and dancing) mathematics (measuring, cutting, building of sets), and art (constructing hand props, program, and posters).  The children are involved in every aspect of the play – it is a community effort.

Grants In Action: Classroom Learning Apps

Fall 2015 Grant Cycle

Educational Apps for Classroom iPads.  Funds Received $200.00

With your generous grant, I was able to purchase a variety of apps for many different subjects to help supplement and differentiate my instruction for my students.  When a student uses the different apps, it incorporates their own profile, which allows them to work at their own pace and skill level.  The apps that I purchased have been implemented during Tier 1 and Tier 2 reading, along a variety of subjects for my homeroom class.

Along with the excitement of blended learning, my students learned how to navigate the ipad even more; having to drag, click, talk, and even type with the new apps. These skills will be very beneficial in 3rd grade when they take the Smarter Balanced Assessment.

When technology is utilized in the classroom, engagement and excitement in learning typically increases. Because we are teaching kids who are digital natives, blended learning in the classroom is vital. My students are even more engaged now that we have high quality apps that can be used by every student to ensure learning success!

Along with increasing engagement, being able to reach students different learning styles is possible with the new apps that can be specialized to each child.  For example, in our reading class, the students used the app “Letter School” multiple times a week during centers. This app tells the student the sound each letter makes, and then allows them to make the letter with their finger. If a student forms the letter incorrectly, it corrects them and gives them more practice with the letter. One student in particular, who struggles with handwriting, has improved immensely ever since using this app. What they are learning on the ipad translates to paper and pencil seamlessly!

Using ipads during class time has always been exciting, but seeing their eyes light up every time I explain one of our new apps is priceless! My class and I greatly appreciate your generous grant!

2016 Annual CEF fundraiser

New 2016-2017 Grant Cycle Dates

OBE 2015For the 2016-2017 school year, the Cascade Education Foundation will offer two grant cycles to align better with classroom planning and provide educators more time between cycles to submit an application.   You can find the application and summary forms on the CEF grant page HERE.  For questions or other information, please contact CEF at cef@cascadesd.org.

 Fall 2016 Grant Cycle Details

Grant request applications will be due on or before October 31st, 2016 at the District Office or mailed directly to CEF.

  • Grant applications can be written for the entire 2016-17 school year.
  • Grant applications will be reviewed by the grant committee and voted on at the November board meeting.
  • Check will be issued in early December 2016

 Spring 2017 Grant Cycle Details

Grant request applications will be due on or before February 28th, 2017 at the District office or mailed directly to CEF

  • Grant applications can be written for the remaining 2016-17 school year or early fall 2017.
  • The grant application will be reviewed by the grant committee and voted on at the March 2017 board meeting.
  • Checks will be issued in early April 2017 and early September 2017

Join the CEF Board

Cascade Education Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping teachers and students in the Cascade School District in Leavenworth, Washington. Donations and money raised through fundraising go directly to schools in the community.

Our small group of board members needs your help; we are looking for new volunteer members that are passionate about education and whose diverse experience and involvement in the Leavenworth community would be an asset to our organization.

 Desired Skills and experience:

  • Technical expertise: Need someone to help manage the CRM and Auction software
  • Community Connection: Seeking new leaders in the community to help with fundraising efforts
  • Planning and project management skills: Recruiting a seasoned planner or project manager to help coordinate annual events

 General Board Member Responsibilities

  1. Regularly attends board meetings and other important meetings
  2. Makes serious commitment to participate actively in committee work.
  3. Volunteers for and willingly accepts assignments and completes them thoroughly and on time.
  4. Stays informed about committee matters, prepares themselves well for meetings, and reviews and comments on minutes and reports.
  5. Gets to know other committee members and builds a collegial working relationship that contributes to consensus.
  6. Is an active participant in the committee’s annual evaluation and planning efforts.
  7. Participates in fund raising for the organization(nonprofit only).
